Technical Assistance II

The Fish Quarantine and Inspection Agency (FQIA/BKIPM) of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (MoMAF), with support from ARISE+ Indonesia, has concluded a five-day capacity-building workshop on methods for testing residues, contaminants and heavy metals according to the European Union legislation and requirements.

More than 200 fisheries quality and safety inspectors and laboratory officials within the MoMAF took part in the online training held on 4-8 July 2022.

In his opening remarks, Mr Widodo expressed his great appreciation to ARISE+ Indonesia for the strategic support to enhance the competence of FQIA and the MoMAF personnel.

"This capacity-building programme aims to strengthen the quality assurance system and safety of fishery products, including testing mechanism in the laboratory," said Mr Widodo Sumiyanto, the Head of Quality and Safety Control Center, FQIA.

Enhanced testing capacities that comply with EU requirements are expected to facilitate and improve fishery exports, especially to the European Union.

Delivering welcome remarks on the second day of training, ARISE+ Indonesia Standard and Quality Senior Expert Alain Peyré offered the participants for continued support and a follow-up discussion after the training.

The testing methodology of residues and contaminants training was delivered remotely by an eminent analytical chemistry professor from the University of Latvia, Prof Dr Vadims Bartkevics.

Meanwhile, a Danish professor lecturing electrochemical science at the Botswana International University of Science and Technology, Prof Jens Andersen PhD, presented the most recent testing methods on heavy metals. ARISE+ Indonesia Export Quality Senior Expert, Arief Safari, facilitated the workshop.

"The training was a great opportunity for me to gain detailed technical testing knowledge that will be beneficial in supporting the quality and safety inspection of the fishery products and determining the correct test method in the laboratory," said Ayu Maya, a quality inspector at FQIA Banjarmasin who participated in the training.
