Rules of Origin (RoO) are used to determine the country of origin of a product for various purposes, including the treatment, such as the applicable tariff rate, given to a product that is traded between two countries. They take a very significant importance in the trade arrangement between two countries, especially when the arrangement includes preferential tariff rates on certain products. RoO therefore constitute a pillar in trade negotiations processes.

A GI label is an important differentiating factor which adds a premium to the value to the product. While Indonesian GIs have a very high potential, it is observed that many GI products are not always labelled appropriately on the marketplace. Such omissions are counterproductive to the added value of genuine products and deprive them of legal protection against possible malpractices. To address the issue, DGIP, with technical collaboration from the European Union-funded ARISE+ Indonesia Trade Support Facility, has developed the Indonesia IG Branding Guidelines.
